Almost everyone in Monroe County knows that there are several unique subdivisions on Big Pine Key – but there are a number of unintentionally hidden treasures that are not known to many. On the northeast section of Big Pine is one of these largely unknown subdivisions known as Koehn’s Subdivision – and is often referred to by locals as “The Old Big Pine Key Fishing Village”. This is one of the oldest and first developed areas in Big Pine, and there are still many trap yards and other areas zoned for commercial use such as boat repair and heavy equipment sales and operation. There are both multi story and ground level homes here, and they are all unique, no cookie cutter homes here. There are a few very old structures still standing which add to the character here, of which there a generous amount of.
Located in the midst of a large indigenous area along with lush tropical landscape at the end of the main road in Koehn’s, is a beautiful bay front view, along with sailboats at anchor and fish abounding. The ride through this view is like taking a trip back in time ~ there is water on both sides of the road flanked by mangroves and trees. I not long ago witnessed a group of 12 juvenile deer bounding out of the thick woods in the middle of this area, they were together as a team, playing and kicking up their heels.
The houses here were originally built to last for years ~ and some homeowners have lived in this area for decades, while others are just finding out what a unique neighborhood this is. Far off the beaten path, yet it is just a few minutes drive to the local supermarket, restaurants, dive shops and other local amenities. Back in this quiet part of Big Pine there is practically no traffic, and wildlife and the sounds of nature abound. Many of the yards are beautifully landscaped with tropical trees, hedges and flowers, but most have plenty of room for a garden.
This subdivision is perfect for those who want to experience the true, calm, laidback lifestyle that the Florida Keys can offer. As with so many areas in Big Pine, there are spectacular sunrises, a multitude stars at night, and tropical scented breezes for your enjoyment!
There is always more information to gather about this and all subdivisions to help familiarize you with the area, along with the Key Isle real estate options so that you can make wise, informed decisions.
